Distress Oxide & Texture Paste

Hello there Crafty Doer! For this Weekly Project Post, I’ve created a layout using Distress Texture Paste and Distress Oxides. I was inspired by an artist on Instagram who created very cool dimension to a background piece. She used more of a collage technique versus the technique I use but the inspiration is there! Here’s how it went:

I’ve been really into designing my own cut file titles lately. There’s a ton of negatives left over and always feel bad when I just toss them (don’t hate me). I started saving them in a small plastic bin ever since I saw Zoey Scarpelli (@scrapsaurus) use her alpha scraps to create dimension to a background! So, I began to adhere random alpha scraps onto my base.

Distress Texture Paste comes in a variety of consistencies. I used Opaque Texture Paste which is a matte paste. This paste can absorb color, so I used Distress Oxides and Spray Stains to color my paste. I simply put down my oxide pad onto my glass working surface and mixed in a tiny bit of paste. I ended up mixing two colors together until I got the shade I wanted. Then, I cover the letters until their original color is invisible. I’ll put the list of colors at the end of the post if you reeeally want to know. The paper is Woodland Grove by Maggie Holmes.

I used the end of my paintbrush to outline the letters and help them pop out. Yes, I could’ve used a scoring tool, but the paint brush was closer. For additional highlighting of the letters, I diluted the Oxide pads on my glass working surface and applied them with a paintbrush. I’m a crafter, of course I use my tools in ways they weren’t intended to be used! I stamped Elements Stamps from Stamperia by Vicky Papaioannouset around the alphas to finish off the clusters.

Finally, I used what is left over of the Simple Stories Retro Summer sticker sheet for my title and embellishment. I also reached for my collection of random sequin for sparkle. I distressed the edges of the paper before adhering it to the black camera pattern paper. Using an ultra fine black marker, I drew thin lines around the page and on top of the alphas to help tie in the black from the photo and base paper.

Thanks for popping in! If you like, you can watch the full process video on YouTube HERE. I hope that you found inspiration to play with mixed media. Come back next week for the third project of my Mixed Media March Madness series!

Please remember that you create because YOU were created fearfully and wonderfully. You belong even if paper crafting isn’t your thing.
