Counterfeit Kit Challenge | Project Reveal | Guest Designer

Hello There Crafty Doer! I am giddy with excitement to be a guest designer over at a Counterfeit Kit Challenge! At CKC, you are encouraged to pull your own kit from your own stash, while drawing inspiration from the inspiration kit of the month. This month’s Challenge #1 is -Make It Messy! The inspiration Kit is from, Not Just for Boys Kit Club called, “November Rain”. There are “Master Forgers” to help guide you through the process of pulling your kit from your stash if you need the help. Head on over to their blog for that and more helpful tips and inspiration.

I was inspired by the blues and gold in this kit. Seeing all the mediums in the Essential Add-On Kit made me excited to reach for mine! So, the challenge for February is to use at least two mediums on your project. I’m just glad there wasn’t a limit to how many mediums I could use! Here’s how it went:

When it came time to counterfeit the kit, I looked to see if I had anything remotely close to it. I noticed all the wood pattern paper and I knew I had a couple of those floating around in my stash. I was happy to see Distress Ink and Distress Oxide because I love Distress! When I decided that I liked the hues of blues vs the hues of yellow, I pulled the blue cardstock for the base. I kept coming back to the striped pattern paper, so I dug through my stash in hopes that I had some striped paper and by golly, I did!

I was drawn to the plaid pattern paper, but I just got this trio of stencils called Peppermint Kisses by Vicki Boutin and one of them is a plaid stencil! I loved all the gold foil in the alphas and ephemera so I collected anything that would give that , same feel. This included TCW Stencil Butter in Champagne Gold sequin from my stash and DCWV Metallics Mat Stack. I grabbed a few tag die cuts, twine, and brads for them when I saw the large manilla tags in the Add-On Kit. A last-minute grab was my Create Happiness Elements stamp set from Stamperia by Vicky Papaioannou.

I started ink smooshing Distress Ink in Chipped Sapphire. and Distress Oxide (colors: Speckled Egg, Faded Jeans & Prize Ribbon) in on my white cardstock. After building up a few layers, I splattered with Distress Watercolor Pencil in Prized Ribbon. I cut tags out of this and added blue brads and twine. I began to work on my background. I used a plaid stencil and Distressed Oxide in Speckled Egg. I rotated the stencil so the plaid would be vertical instead of at an angle. Next, I used the script stamp and the numbers stamp with Speckled Egg. I stamped one on top of the other to create clusters. At this point I knew the design of my layout so I was building the clusters with my design in mind. I watered down a tiny bit of stencil butter to splatter and used my heat drying tool to dry.

I really liked the “ALL BOY” Acrylic Embellishment by Paige Evans so I designed a similar title in Cricut Design Space. I also cut out the number 3 in the same style and a few little pennants to use as a banner. The gold accents were my favorite in this kit because I had a few different gold sequin in my stash and used them for embellishing. I adhered a little paper tearing on the left edge of the base and finally, I die cut a white tag to adhere to one of the mixed media tags for journaling.

I’m so grateful to Brandi and CKC for inviting me on their blog! I had such fun participating in this challenge! You can watch the full process video of this layout on my YouTube channel here. I hope you were inspired to add a little mixed media to your projects.
