Cohesive Cards From Gel Print Scraps

Hello There Crafty Doer! For this Weekly Project Post I dipped into my gel printing scraps and created a few birthday cards. I realized it was time to restock my birthday card stash when I reached for one and it was empty! There’s a way to make your scraps look cohesive even though they are from completely different projects and color schemes. Here’s how it went:

Head over to my YouTube Channel to look at the scraps I was working with. They were definitely from different projects, but you couldn’t tell by looking at these cards! I used 8-9 inch pieces of packaging tape to create collage strips. I simply tore my scraps apart and stuck them to the tape. I did my best to categorize colors when I did this.

Once I had the entire strip of tape covered in my scraps, I used Art Institute Glitter Glue to adhere any corners or pieces that overlapped. Next, I trimmed the edges with scissors and had four beautiful, collaged strips to work with.

I did one simple thing to make the collage strips look cohesive. I added a couple of different elements throughout the entire strips, treating them as if they were one canvas. 1. I stamped clusters of the same images throughout the strips. Although I used Distressed Ink in Frayed Burlap for all of them, I used Saltwater Taffy for the collage strips that already carried hues of pink. I did the same with Salvaged Patina with the collage strips that already contained hues of blue. 2. I ran the collage strips through my sewing machine for stitching. You can easily spot these cohesive elements in all the pieces even after cutting them up.

Another thing you can do to help with the cohesiveness of your cards when using this collage method of repurposing your scraps is to use a die. This die is from Emily Moore Card Makers Essentials Die Set. I love this die because of the shape and stitching detail. I used the A2 card liner die, which is also included in this die set for the panel of all my cards. The stitching is another element you will see throughout all the cards. This helps make the cards look more cohesive.

The tag die is also included in Emily Moore Card Makers Essentials die set to which I added black string. I used Emily’s Birthday Sentiment Stamps for all the sentiments on these cards. Using Versafine Onyx Back Ink to stamp with, help tie in the black sewing machine stitching. I used her sentiment dies to give shape to all my sentiments.

Thanks so much for popping in! If you liked these projects, check out my last post where I used nothing but products from Emily Moore Designs. You can watch that full process video HERE and the full process video to this project HERE.

I also just want to remind you that you create because YOU were fearfully and wonderfully created. You belong even if paper crafting isn’t your thing.
